Ranau's Animism
Other tribes from South Sumatra include all tribes from South Sumatra such as the Ranau tribe. The Ranau tribe is an ancient tribe that is believed to be the ancestors of today's Lampung people. In the book History of the Lampung Region, it is stated that in the past the Ranau tribe still adhered to animist/dynamism beliefs before the arrival of Hinduism from mainland India in the 3rd century AD.
Sekuraan is a masquerade party held at the beginning of the month of Shawwal / starting on Eid al-Fitr. As a society that still adheres to animist beliefs, at that time sekuraan was done to summon the spirits of ancestors during the harvest festival. In the 13th century, when several figures spreading Islam from Pagaruyung succeeded in subduing the Buay Tumi Kingdom, sekuraan developed into folk art.
Several groups of people from the Ranau tribe did not want to accept Islam as their religion because some of them did not accept the teachings about human origins & claimed not to be descendants of Adam, but 3 daughters from that tribe then married the masters who spread Islam. The residents of the Ranau tribe, who at that time had not yet converted to Islam, chose to flee to the coast/cross to Java Island & some others fled to the Lesser Sunda Islands. According to Prof. Dr. Sujarwo, it was explained that there are 2 tribes living at the top of Mount Pesagi who have different attitudes to the Ranau tribe. These two tribes are groups that are open to the introduction of Islamic teachings, namely the Kenyangan & Nekhima tribes.
