Langkah Lama
Apart from being a habitat for various types of protected rare flora & fauna, the TNBT area is also a place where several indigenous tribal communities such as Talang Mamak live. The Talang Mamak tribe is inland in the Riau area. The Talang Mamak people are a group of isolated people who still live traditionally on the downstream side of the Indragiri River, Riau Province, Indonesia.
Talang means field & mamak means mother. In general, Talang Mamak means mother's field. Based on the saga that developed among the community, their ancestors came down from Mount Marapi to Talukkuantan, explored Batang Kuantan led by Datuk Patih with the title Perpatih Nan Sebatang, then built a settlement downstream of the river.
To visit this river, go via Siberida by car to get to the former HPH road. Furthermore, the distance from Dalex Road to Tuo Datai Hamlet is around 6 - 8 km, which can only be done on foot. Currently, the total population of Talang Mamak from Lubuk Tebrau - Melenai is 265 people.
In terms of beliefs, the majority of the Talang Mamak tribe still adhere to a religious belief, namely animism. For centuries, this traditional community has lived in customs & rituals that are believed to be the Langkah Lama. The religious belief adhered to by the Talang Mamak community is called Langkah Lama.
This religion is animistic in nature due to the belief in the existence of ancestral spirits / called ninik - datuk & also supernatural beings also called spirits. This religious belief teaches the Talang Mamak people to be oriented towards worshiping ninik - datuk & spirits who live in the forest. They believe in evil spirits living in certain places such as forest dwellers, big trees, grave ghosts, etc.
This is because of the fear of being scolded/reprimanded by the spirit which could cause illness/death. The Talang Mamak people believe that evil spirits / supernatural inhabitants in their environment will not disturb them if they are not disturbed by humans. This is because they still show their tribal identity clearly, inherit ancestral traditions & still carry out traditional ceremonies strictly.
These include gawai, kemantan, graveyard, and circumcision for boys aged 12 years and over who are considered close to adulthood. Kumantan is a means of communication between the patalla guru and evil spirits. The essence of this ceremony is to honor the spirits of the deceased.
Kumantan also conveys and expresses the various wishes of the patalla as well as the wishes and requests of supernatural spirits, including the patalla itself. Kumantan can also help the spirit of the recently deceased, showing him the way to the supernatural. Kumantan can summon patalla & other supernatural spirits by holding certain ceremonies.
The supernatural spirit / patalla will come and incarnate into him. It was at times like that that the germs were said to convey the demands of the supernatural spirit.
