Laut's Animism

Riau comes from the word riahi which means sea water. The island on Jemur Island is circular in shape so the middle is a calm sea. The Pasir Panjang Beach area consists of Tanjung Medang, Teluk Rhu & Tanjung Punak in Rupat District and is directly opposite Dumai City, it can easily be reached because from Dumai there is sea transportation available for public passengers.

Sea water flows in and meets the water of the Kampar River, causing waves to occur at quite high speeds and produce sounds like thunder and strong winds. The Laut People played an important role in supporting the glory of the Kingdom in the Malacca Strait. When in 1718 Raja Kecil, a Minangkabau adventurer claimed the right to the throne of Johor, the Orang Laut gave their support.

Although a dualism of leadership later emerged within the Sultanate, initially without any conflict between them, Raja Muhammad Ali, who was preferred by the Dutch, then became the ruler of Siak, while his cousin Raja Ismail, who was not liked by the Dutch, emerged as King of Laut, ruling the eastern waters of Sumatra reached the South China Sea, building power in the 7 Island group. The history of this maritime almsgiving tradition/custom begins with the order of Raja Kecil. Sea alms also have roots in the animist & religious beliefs of the coastal communities of this island.

Traditional peoples believe that sea spirits have a great influence on their catches. Therefore, they perform a sea alms ceremony as an expression of gratitude & a request that the sea spirits continue to provide abundant sustenance and as a request for safety for the fishermen & their families so that in carrying out their duties as fishermen they do not experience any disturbance.
