Sakai's Animism
The Sakai people are a group of people who are isolated and still live traditionally and nomadically in an area on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, precisely west of Bengkalis Regency & west of Siak Regency. Some experts think that the Sakai people are a mixture of Wedoid people and Minangkabau people who migrated around the 14th century. Meanwhile, the Sakai people themselves think that they came from the land of Pagaruyung.
The village head was given customary rights in several areas which later became the forerunners of the Perbatinan area. Respect for the Sakai people by the Palace increased after an orphaned Sakai child was adopted by the King & given the name Khanung, where he was considered a child. The Sakai people, also called Mani, Maniq / Kensiu in Malaysia, are the only Negrito ethnic group in Thailand.
The first group lives in the Titiwangsa Mountains in Yala & Narathiwat while the second group lives in the Banthat Mountains in Phatthalung, Trang, and Satun. Some Sakai people embrace Islam, while others adhere to animist/dynamism beliefs. In their belief system, they believe that the spirits of people who have died live again in the afterlife.
Spirits & ghosts are divided into 2 types, good and evil. They believe that if they bathe in flowing water their spirits will be carried away by the water.
