Halmahera's Animism


Indonesia has a diversity of ethnic groups. Based on data from the 2010 BPS census, there were 1340 ethnic groups in the country. They adhere to the Sunda Wiwitan teachings, which believe in ancestral spirits & worship 1 great power in nature, which they believe in and greatly respect the traditional leader called puun.

The Wana tribe usually calls themselves Tau Taa, different from the term from outsiders, namely Tau Taa Wana, which means people who live in forest areas. In addition to animism & dynamism beliefs, some Wana tribe members who often have contact with Bugis, Mori, and Ampana / Bajau people, many end up embracing Islam. Some others embrace Protestant Christianity, whose teachings were brought by an evangelist in Lemo.

This 1 tribe comes from Kalimantan. In 2019, the Dayak Punan sub-tribe in the 2 regions was successfully united. Some of these sub-tribes are Punan Uheng Kereho, Hovongan, Bukat Kalbar & Bukat, Seputan and Aoheng Kaltim.

Originating from the interior of the mountainous and southern Papua, the Korowai / Koroway tribe is known to have only interacted with the outside world about 3 decades ago. They occupy a forest area about 150 km from the Arafura Sea. The purpose of making houses with this model is to avoid attacks by wild animals and disturbances from evil spirits, which they usually call laleo.

The Anak Dalam tribe, also known as the Kubu tribe, is an inland tribe that lives in the lowland forest area in central Sumatra, precisely in Jambi. In 2022, it is estimated that the population of the Anak Dalam tribe will be around 200,000 people. Historically, the Modole tribe's true origin is unknown, but based on the statements of elders and traditional figures, the Modole tribe originated from Talaga Lina, some also say that the Modole tribe originated from the Tabaru tribe.

That is what is thought to have made the Europeans the ancestors of the Lingon tribe. Some say that the Lingon tribe also adheres to animism and dynamism, like the early beliefs of other tribes in the archipelago. There is an interesting story from the interior of Halmahera.

The Tobelo Dalam tribe is one of the inland tribes originating from North Maluku. In the local language, the word togutil " is o hanga manyawa which means backward, rustic & left behind. There is a Tobelo Dalam tribe that lives in the Aketajawe Lolobata National Park area.

In addition, several others are spread across the Totoduku, Tukur, and Kobekulo forests & in the interior of the Wasile forest located on the east side of Ternate. The beliefs held by this inland tribe are animism, which worships the power of the universe.

Lematang's Animism

Sumbawa's Animism

Like people in other areas, some Sumbawa people still adhere to animism & some adhere to Hinduism. Before Islam came to Sumbawa, the people on the island first adhered to an animism & dynamism belief system, namely belief in the spirits of ancestors who had died.
