Sentani's Animism

First, the western group concentrated on Yonokom Island, then the eastern group concentrated on Asei Island, and finally, the central group concentrated on Ifar Island.

Precisely between the villages of Atamali, Abar, Khameyaka & Babo during the day suddenly a land the size of a futsal field appeared in the middle of the lake and this became an attraction for the surrounding community but also made some residents who had never seen this directly shudder, because this made the lake water cloudy & the land had black soil. According to the philosophy of our ancestors, this is related to animist beliefs. The sudden appearance of land in the middle of Lake Sentani has a spirit/soul that gives a bad sign to the surrounding community.

Our ancestors often called the sudden appearance of land in Lake Sentani avere in the Sentani language. According to their beliefs, the avere phenomenon cannot be predicted when it will appear, sometimes 20 years or more, according to their wishes. Although this ancestral belief cannot be accounted for in theory, they still believe in it.

Grass grows abundantly on the hills, believed to be a sacred place inhabited by supernatural beings, the ancestors of the Tutari tribe. Papuan archaeologist Hari Suroto said that, according to the Doyo community, large boulders existed before their ancestors lived in the area. The ancestors of the Doyo community originally lived on the island of Yonoqom / Yonahang around Lake Sentani.

The Tutari community in prehistoric times had known the beliefs of animism, dynamism & ancestral spirits.
