Parhabonaron

Based on the 2010 Indonesian Population Census of 12,930,319 registered residents, the majority of the population of North Sumatra is Batak, namely 44.75%, including all Batak sub-tribes, including Simalungun. The Southern family consists of its languages. The shape of the traditional house in this area is similar to the Batak Toba traditional house.

The Batak people, generally this tribe, have a variety of special foods made from pork. According to several studies, the use of ulos by the Batak tribe shows similarities with the Karen people on the borders of Myanmar, Thailand & Laos, especially in their headbands, cloth, and ulos. This tribe has a musical instrument called the gondang which is usually played during traditional ceremonies at weddings, deaths, etc.

The original clan of the population is Damanik & 3 immigrant clan, namely Saragih, Sinaga, and Purba. Sinaga means simada naga, where the dragon in God's mythology is known as the cause of earthquakes and landslides. They are not too concerned about genealogy because the determinants of speech in this tribe are hasusuran & tibalni parhundul in the customary horja.

Some sources write that this is because the entire Raja tribal clan is bound by a close traditional alliance because of the concept of marriage between the Raja and puang bolon who is the daughter of the neighboring Raja. Like King Tanoh Djawa with his puang bolon from the Siantar Kingdom, Raja Siantar whose puang bolon came from Partuanan Silappuyang, Raja Panei from the daughter of Raja Siantar, Raja Silau from the daughter of Raja Raya, Raja Purba from the daughter of Raja Siantar & Silimakuta from the daughter of Raja Raya / Tongging. The original belief of this community is animism mixed with dynamism.

This community adheres to the Parhabonaron animist religion. This community believes that there is a force in the universe inhabited by spirits that can regulate their life journey. They call the spirits of the dead symagotes.

Before the arrival of Christianity & Islam to this district, they already adhered to an animist religion/belief called Parhabonaron which is a legacy of Hindu culture that has been embedded for generations. If investigated more deeply, this community has various beliefs related to the use of mantras from the datu accompanied by offerings to the spirits of the ancestors which are always preceded by a call to 3 Gods called Naibata, namely Naibata at the top, Naibata in the middle & Naibata at the bottom. Nagori Atas is the place where Naibata God lives, Nagori Tongah is the earth where humans live, and Nagori Toruh is the place where the spirits of deceased humans live.

This religion is the religion of the beliefs of ancestors which contains mystical elements as well as elements of animism & dynamism. In terms of religion, their traditional form of religion is animism & dynamism. Before the arrival of Christian missionaries from the RMG in 1903, the population of the eastern part of this district generally adhered to Islam while the western part adhered to animism.

The slow spread of the gospel in this land is influenced by the traditions of this society, which still adhere to animism. After Pastor August Theis took part in spreading the gospel in this land for 18 years, many of these people abandoned their animist beliefs and converted to Christianity. Then, Christianity was mainly adhered to by this tribe.

The percentage of the population who adheres to Islam is 57.41, Christianity 42.14 & other religions 0.45. 0.05% Hinduism is generally adhered to by people of Indian Tamil descent. Another name is Pelbegu.
