Bengkulu's Animism

Bengkulu is a province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia with the capital city of Bengkulu City. According to records, in 1712 in this city, there were 800 housing units. Inhabited by the Lembak ethnic group in the Sungai Itam Kingdom & Selebar Kingdom.

As a consequence of the treaty with England, that country had monopoly rights to buy pepper in both areas. The majority do not know God & some still believe in animism. The Luka Gile tradition is closely related to animism & dynamism beliefs and then developed into a means of entertainment.

The night is considered the right time to summon spirits who will be put into the lukah/bubu. With the ritual ceremony of the Lukah dance, the spirits are respected so that they become peaceful without disturbing the humans around them. When Islam came, there were 2 different cases when the Sultan of Anak Sungai was proud to call himself a Malay, while the Prince of Sungai Lemau, did not want to be called a Malay, but called himself an Ulu man.

The oldest sources about maulid, such as the work of Jamal al-Din ibn al Mamun & Abd al Salam ibn al Tuwair, as mentioned by Kaptein, explain that maulid celebrations have been celebrated since the era of the Fatimi dynasty. Meanwhile, Kaptein himself doubts this & believes that there was no maulid celebration before 514 H. Meanwhile, in the Sunni tradition, according to Kaptein, maulid celebrations began in Syria during the time of Nur al-Din.

Meanwhile, in the archipelago itself, no one had confirmed when this maulid tradition was carried out for the first time. Hurgronje, for example, said that the Mawlid tradition was widespread in the villages in Aceh when he was there & said this tradition began in the 16th century on the orders of the Turkish Sultan. This is known based on the work of Abd al Qadir ibn Shaikh ibn Abd Allah al Aidrus in the book al-Nur al Safir an Akhbari al Qarn al Āshir, he explains the figures who died in 944 AH, including the death of Abd al Rahman ibn Ali al Daiba, the author the book al Dibai.

The second text is a text by Sheikh Sulaiman al Rasuli which began written on 20 Dzulhijjah 1341 H. Like the text Sinar Gemala Mestika Alam & Composition Permata Mutiara which lives on Penyengat Island, Riau Islands, the poetry of the maulid book written by al Rasuli also lives in Riau Mainland, to be precise in Kampar Regency, Riau Province. This art was then accepted & developed by the Lembak community leader, H Wajid bin Raud around the 17th century.

The group practices once a week on Friday nights after Isha prayers.
