Madraism

This short article wants to examine the future of local religion in West Java by taking a sample of the Sundanese Wiwitan indigenous community. In this discussion which was attended by 40 participants, Zezen Zaenal Mutaqin, researcher & lecturer at UIN Jakarta, was present as a speaker. The founder of Madraism, Madrais, was born in Susukan Ciawi Gebang in 1822.

Then in 1825 he was entrusted to Ki Sastra Wedana, a kuwu in Cigugur with the hope that one day he could continue his ancestors' struggle against the invaders. To trick the Company, they made a will that the child be recognized as Ki Sastra Wadana's child. At age 10, Prince Kusuma Adiningrat worked for Kuwu Sagarahiang as a buffalo herder known as Taswan.

In the Dutch era, the life of Madrais and his family was very luxurious, like a regent. Madrais died at the age of 65. In Madraism, the Sundanese Javanese religious creed is performed in Sundanese, which means, there is no God but Allah & Madrais is the Messenger of Allah. Its followers are prohibited from going against village customs, while Islam is said to be a good religion only for Arabs.

When the followers have been approved to marry, they will be obliged to undergo the masar tradition, namely a period of getting to know each other for at least 100 days. Meanwhile, their guideline is the word tilu, a number word in Indonesian that means 3, so in simple terms, kembanguh tilu, can be interpreted as 3 things that must always be upheld in life. This is because ADS, apart from believing in & maintaining the teachings of its predecessor, Kyai Madrais, also seeks to preserve the traditional heritage of its ancestors.

While Islam was developing, Madrais also developed various animist symbols, music & rituals. The Al Hidayah Mosque, which is a Madraism house of worship, was founded on 1 - 1 - 2005. The old negative identity as a heretical sect has changed into a traditional community that maintains the ancestral culture of the Sundanese people.
