Sumbawa's Animism

Like people in other areas, some Sumbawa people still adhere to animism & some adhere to Hinduism. Before Islam came to Sumbawa, the people on the island first adhered to an animism & dynamism belief system, namely belief in the spirits of ancestors who had died. However, after Islamic teachings entered Sumbawa, the animist belief system & Hindu-Buddhist beliefs slowly began to disappear.

Apart from Sunan Prapen, Sunan Giri also sent one of his students named Sheikh Zainal Abidin, son of Kolono Marhum, the first King of Ternate to convert to Islam. After Kolono Marhum died in 1486, his position was replaced by his son, Sultan Zainal Abidin. It was only during the reign of the last King of the Awan Kuning dynasty, namely Dewa Maja Purwa, that records were found about the activities of the Kingdom's government, including that Dewa Maja Purwa had signed an agreement with the Kingdom of Gowa in Sulawesi.

1637 Mas Goa was succeeded by his sister's son, Mas Bantan. After Dewa Mas Goa was dismissed because he was deemed to have violated one of the peace agreements with the Kingdom of Gowa, he was forced to be exiled along with his followers, to approximately the current Utan Rhee sub-district area. Mas Bantan is the son of Raden Subangsa, a prince from Banjarmasin.

The result of his marriage to Mas Goa's sister, Amas Penghulu. Amas Goa has a sister, Amas Penghulu, who is married to Raden Subangsa from the Banjar Sultanate. Mas Bantan was born at the beginning of the period of power of the Dalam Bawa dynasty, replacing the Awan Kuning dynasty.

The length of his reign was from 1675 - 1701. The Sultan of Banjar around 1700 was Panembahan Tengah Sultan Tahmidullah. In 1702, Raja Mas Bantan handed over the kingdom to his son Amas Madina who had the title Muhammad Jalaluddin Syah.

Amas Madina married I Rakia Karaeng Agangjene, giving birth to a daughter who became Sultanah named I Masugi Ratu Karaeng Bonto Parang. After Sultan Kaharuddin I died, power was taken over by his wife, I Sugiratu Karaeng Bontoparang, whose title was Sultanah Siti Aisyah, who was the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Jalaluddin Syah. This female king was known to often have disagreements with the Sultan's servants until in 1761 she was removed from the throne.

I Sugiratu Karaeng Bontoparang was actually going to be replaced by Lalu Mustanderman Datu Bejing, but he refused. This is very possible because Sultan Muhammad Jalaluddin III ran the government for 48 years. Dutch power was increasingly rampant.

Right in May 1942, 8 Japanese warships landed at Labuhan Mapin under the command of Colonel Haraichi.
