Wetu Telu
Most of the inhabitants of the island of Lombok come from the Sasak tribe. Most of the population inhabiting the province of West Nusa Tenggara are local indigenous tribes, namely 93.33%, including the Sasak tribe 67.57%. The word sak is also used by some Dayak tribes on the island of Kalimantan to say one.
Sasak, Sumbawa & Mbojo are the languages spoken by the residents of the two main islands. However, judging from the pronunciation of the Sasak language, it is similar to Balinese. With the capital of the Kawi language he mastered, the Sasak script & language, many poets composed, adapted/copied ancient Javanese people into Sasak lontar.
As a nation with a lot of diversity, Indonesia is always interesting to discuss. The village community there still preserves animist & spiritual culture which is believed to be the guardian of Mount Rinjani. The followers of this order also believe in the existence of the spirits of ancestors and supernatural powers in objects.
Respect for ancestors is prioritized as a form of intermediary between humans and God. Islamic leader, Tuan Guru, who before the arrival of the Dutch had carried out da'wah to broadcast Islamic teachings among the Wetu Telu. First, Wetu Telu means 3 ways of reproduction of living things.
Second, Wetu Telu means 3 sources of law in Islam. Third, Wetu Telu means 3 periods of development that humans go through. Wetu Telu is also often called Sesepen, which comes from the word sesep / seep which means knowledge/teachings that are taught to completion.
Not surprisingly, all the people in the village are adherents of Islam, but with Islamic nuances that are closely related to the cultural colors inherited from their ancestors. They believe that ancestors are bearers of God's blessings who provide protection & prosperity for the descendants of the Wetu Telu Muslim people. The Alip Festival is a traditional event held every 8 years that aims to maintain the existence of the graves of Bayan ancestors in the ancient Bayan Mosque tomb complex.
The aim is to protect the graves of Bayan's ancestors which are located in the ancient Bayan mosque burial complex. Rowah Wulan is held on the first day of the month of Shaban, while Sampet Friday is held on the last Friday of the month of Shaban. They fast at the beginning, middle & end of the month of Ramadan.
The Maleman Qunut ceremony is held on the 16th night of the fasting month. Meanwhile, the maleman likuran is a ceremony on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th & 29th nights of the fasting month. Meanwhile, on the nights of the 22nd, 24th, 26th & 28th, a meal was held together by the kyai.
Meanwhile, lebaran tinggi is the same as Eid al-Fitr. Lebaran topat is held a week after the lebaran tinggi ceremony. The lebaran pendek was carried out 2 months after the lebaran topat.
Even though the implementation time is the same, namely in the month of Rabiul Awal, Wetu Telu celebrates Maulud to commemorate the marriage of Adam & Eve. Concerning marriage, the Wetu Telu wedding sermon is read in Arabic, while consent and acceptance are used in the local Sasak language. On the one hand, globalization forms a paradigm for a more modern life & as a result, ancestral teachings through tradition are starting to fade.
The view of being outdated is more dominant than the belief in cultural progress because it respects what ancestors have achieved in the past which must be preserved. Wetu Telu Islam has a philosophy of life, namely never forgetting your ancestors, and continuing to survive amidst the swift current of modernity.
