Lamalera's Animism
Based on history & poetry passed down from generation to generation, known as lia asa usu, the ancestors of the people in Lamalera came from Tanah Luwuk to the south of Lembata Island and then remained for generations. The ancestors of the Lamalera people came about 500 years ago. Previously, the ancestors of the Lamalera people first followed the Gajah Mada fleet's journey to Halmahera waters until they reached the Bomberai peninsula, then they turned south, towards the islands of Seram, Gorom, Ambon, Banda, Timor & finally landed on the island of Lembata.
The movement of the ancestors of the Lamalera people from Tanah Luwuk was motivated by the attack & conquest of the Kingdom of Tanah Luwuk by Majapahit during the reign of Hayam Wuruk. This tribe is famous for its tradition of hunting sperm whales, known as leva nuang, which has been carried out since the 16th to 17th centuries. This tradition is carried out during the fishing season in May, known as Lewa.
