Sawai's Animism


North Maluku has 37 languages, including Sawai. Even the customary land area of ​​the Sawai tribe is threatened by large companies engaged in nickel mining, which have staked out thousands of hectares of land in the villages of Lelilef Woi Bulan, Sagea & Gemaf. Although they used to be adherents of traditional religions such as animism & dynamism, since the arrival of missionaries from the Netherlands, who introduced Christianity into the lives of the Sawai tribe who are basically practitioners of animism and dynamism, have accepted the presence of Christianity well in their circles, a small part of them still maintain their traditional religion.

Like people in other areas, some Sumbawa people still adhere to animism & some adhere to Hinduism.
