Sebyar's Animism

The tribe is the Sebyar. The Sebyar are an ethnic group inhabiting the southern coastal area of the Doberai Peninsula, specifically in Teluk Bintuni Regency, West Papua. The provincial capital is located in Manokwari, with its largest city in Sorong.

This tribe has a population of around 900 people living in the villages of Aranday, Kiambo, Yakora, Sakauni, Botare, and Tomu. From these examples of traditional stilt houses, it can be seen that stilt houses in Indonesia generally have no more than 20 pillars, each with a distinctive roof and ornamentation. The Sirus house has two staircases that can be customized to suit individual needs. This means they can be located at the front and back, or on either side of the house, one as an ascending staircase and one as a descending staircase.

Before the arrival of Christianity in the Arfak Mountains, the community adhered to animist beliefs, which believe that objects possess supernatural powers.
